Advanced IASTM Therapy

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is an advanced manual therapy technique that uses specially designed stainless steel instruments to detect and treat soft tissue restrictions. At Optimum Physio Therapies in San Antonio, TX, our skilled physical therapists use IASTM to break down scar tissue, reduce fascial restrictions, and improve range of motion for faster recovery.

Conditions We Treat with IASTM

  • Chronic tendonitis and tendinopathy
  • Muscle strains and ligament sprains
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • IT band syndrome
  • Tennis and golfer's elbow
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Post-surgical scar tissue
  • Myofascial restrictions

How IASTM Works

During an IASTM session, your physical therapist uses specialized instruments to scan over and detect areas of soft tissue restriction. The instruments effectively break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue while stimulating a healing response in the treated area. This technique allows for:

  • Precise Detection: Identify areas of tissue restriction that may be missed by hands alone
  • Effective Treatment: Break down scar tissue and fascial adhesions more efficiently
  • Improved Circulation: Increase blood flow to promote healing
  • Enhanced Mobility: Restore optimal tissue function and movement
  • Pain Reduction: Decrease chronic pain associated with soft tissue dysfunction

Benefits of IASTM

  • Faster recovery from injuries
  • Improved range of motion
  • Reduced pain and inflammation
  • Enhanced tissue healing
  • Breakdown of scar tissue
  • Increased flexibility
  • Better athletic performance
  • Non-invasive treatment option

What to Expect

During your IASTM treatment, you may feel some discomfort as the instruments work through areas of restriction, but the treatment should not be unbearable. Some mild bruising or redness may occur, which is a normal part of the healing process. Sessions typically last 5-10 minutes as part of your comprehensive treatment plan. Most patients notice improved mobility and reduced pain within a few sessions. IASTM is often combined with therapeutic exercises and other manual therapy techniques for optimal results.
