Common Questions About Physical Therapy

Do I need a doctor's prescription for physical therapy?

In Texas, you have direct access to physical therapy, which means you don't need a prescription to see a physical therapist. However, some insurance companies may require a referral for coverage. We recommend checking with your insurance provider beforehand. We're happy to help verify your benefits before your first visit.

What should I wear to my physical therapy appointment?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. Athletic wear such as shorts, t-shirts, and athletic shoes are ideal. If you're coming for shoulder or neck treatment, wear a tank top or shirt that allows access to your upper body.

How long will my first appointment take?

Your initial evaluation typically takes 60-90 minutes. This allows your physical therapist to thoroughly assess your condition, discuss your medical history and goals, and begin your treatment. Follow-up appointments are usually 45-60 minutes.

How many physical therapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your condition, severity, and personal goals. Some patients see improvement in just a few weeks, while others with more complex conditions may need several months of treatment. Your physical therapist will discuss an estimated treatment plan during your initial evaluation and adjust it as you progress.

Will physical therapy hurt?

While some discomfort during certain exercises or treatments is normal, physical therapy should not be excessively painful. Your physical therapist will work within your pain tolerance and adjust treatments as needed. Communication is key – always let your therapist know if something is too uncomfortable.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans including Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, and many others. We also accept workers' compensation and auto insurance claims. Contact us at (210) 796-3968 to verify your specific coverage, and we'll be happy to check your benefits for you.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring: your insurance card (front and back), a valid photo ID, completed patient forms (or arrive 15 minutes early to fill them out), any relevant medical records or imaging results (X-rays, MRIs), a list of current medications, and payment for any co-pay or deductible.

Can I choose my own physical therapist?

Yes! You have the right to choose your physical therapy provider. If your doctor refers you elsewhere, you can request to come to Optimum Physio Therapies instead. Our experienced team of physical therapists is here to provide personalized care tailored to your needs.

What is the difference between physical therapy and massage?

While massage therapy focuses primarily on soft tissue manipulation for relaxation and general wellness, physical therapy is a medical treatment that addresses specific injuries, conditions, or functional limitations. Physical therapists are licensed healthcare professionals who create comprehensive treatment plans that may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, education, and various modalities to help you achieve specific functional goals.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

Yes! We understand that our patients have busy schedules. We're open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM. We offer early morning and evening appointments to accommodate your schedule.

Will I have homework or exercises to do at home?

Yes, home exercises are an important part of your recovery. Your physical therapist will teach you specific exercises and stretches to do at home between sessions. These exercises are designed to complement your in-clinic treatment and accelerate your recovery. We'll provide clear instructions and may give you handouts or videos to follow.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

We understand that schedules change. Please call us at (210) 796-3968 as soon as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule. We request at least 24 hours notice so we can offer your appointment time to another patient in need. We'll work with you to find a new time that fits your schedule.

Do you offer telehealth/virtual appointments?

Yes, we offer virtual health services for certain conditions and follow-up appointments. Telehealth can be a convenient option for patients who can't make it to the clinic or prefer remote consultations. Contact us to see if virtual therapy is right for your condition.
